Have You Seen This Man?
Dude, do you remember this guy, does he look familiar? That's right, it's that old Godfather's Pizza guy! You probably enjoy seeing his mug. This seems like some fun nostalgia for you. You're thinking, "Wow, geez, that takes me back, where did old Jdog dig up that dinosaur?" I know that's what you're thinking because that's what I'd be thinking if I was reading this blog and I wasn't me and I hadn't just wrote it.
But you'd be wrong. Ok, here is the bombshell that I discovered the other day: GODFATHER'S IS STILL USING THIS GUY AS THEIR MAIN FORM OF ADVERTISING!! That picture I showed you, that has to be the same one burned into my brain from when I first saw it when I was one.
Why is it that these things happen? You and I look at the fact that this dude is old news—it was time, many many many years ago, to update. But for some reason Godfather's dug in. They said, "No, this is our guy, and if America doesn't like it, they can go [blank] themselves (I can't believe they said that, by the way)." And they've paid dearly for it. When was the last time you've seen a Godfather's commercial? Exactly. Those advertising dollars have dried up quicker than a saucer of water in the Sahara. Average Joes like you and me can at least come up with the idea that if you're going to stick literally to the "Godfather" theme then have to upgrade to James Gandolfini's "Tony Soprano" at least, right?
As a side note, I wonder if Dr. Phil is pissed that they're still using his pictures all these many years later? Yes, in case you didn't notice, that is clearly Doctor Phil. I guess before he made it big he was hard up for cash or whatever, so he threw on a pinstripe suit and slummed it for an afternoon photo shoot for Godfather's—who knew they'd run with the theme for decades and decades, long after the wheels had come off the wagon? Poor guy. But like many young, naive ladies have learned, once you sell those pictures, brother, it's tough luck trying to put the magic back in the bottle.
